Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) — What It Is, Types, Uses & Application Guide

India-வில் DSC ecosystem-ஐ Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA) regulate செய்கிறது. End-usersக்கு DSC-ஐ CCA directly issue செய்யாது; CCA-licensed Certifying Authorities (CAs) issue செய்கின்றன.

For more business-related assistance, visit our Business Services page.

What is a Digital Signature Certificate?

DSC என்பது signer-ன் identity-ஐ digital certificate-ஆக establish செய்யும் credential.

It can be used to:

  • Digitally sign electronic forms

  • Authenticate online filings

  • Sign PDF / electronic documents

  • Submit certain statutory forms

  • Participate in applicable e-Procurement / tender systems

  • Complete authorised business / Government portal transactions

Who Issues DSC in India?

CCA — Controller of Certifying Authorities இந்திய Public Key Infrastructure-ஐ regulate செய்கிறது.

CCA itself end-user applicantsக்கு DSC issue செய்யாது.

Licensed Certifying Authorities மூலம் DSC issue செய்யப்படுகிறது.

Who May Need a DSC?

DSC requirement portal / filing type-க்கு மாறும்.

Common users may include:

  • Company Directors

  • LLP Partners

  • Authorized Signatories

  • Chartered Accountants

  • Company Secretaries

  • Cost Accountants

  • Tax Professionals

  • Government Tender Participants

  • Contractors

  • Business Owners

  • Import / Export Users

  • Other portal users where DSC signing is prescribed

Common Uses of DSC

MCA / Corporate Filings

Companies and LLP-related electronic filings-ல் authorized signatories மற்றும் professionals DSC பயன்படுத்த வேண்டிய situations இருக்கலாம்.

GST

GST Portal சில taxpayer / entity categories மற்றும் transactions-க்கு DSC-based signing support செய்கிறது.

GST portal currently provides Register DSC / Update DSC functionality.

e-Tender / e-Procurement

Government e-Procurement systems electronic bid submission-க்கு DSC require செய்யலாம்.

Income Tax / Other Statutory Portals

Applicable filings / authorization categories-ல் digital signature use செய்யப்படலாம்.

PDF / Electronic Document Signing

Authorized digital-signing software மூலம் documents digitally sign செய்ய DSC use செய்யலாம்.

Class 3 DSC

Current CCA certificate framework-ல் Class 3 certificate important public DSC category.

CCA current Class 3 identity-verification methods include options such as:

  • Aadhaar eKYC Biometric

  • Paper-based application + supporting documents + physical appearance or video verification

  • Aadhaar eKYC OTP + Video Verification

The private key is required to be generated / stored in a compliant hardware cryptographic device.

What Happened to Class 2 DSC?

Older systems often referred to Class 2 and Class 3 separately.

Current CCA framework uses Class 3 to cover higher-assurance personal digital-signature requirements that previously may have involved Class 2 in various applications.

Before telling a customer they need “Class 2”, always verify the current portal requirement.

Signing Certificate vs Encryption Certificate

These are not exactly the same.

Signing Certificate

Used to create digital signatures.

Encryption Certificate

Used for encryption / confidentiality-related purposes.

CCA guidance states that signing and encryption certificates for an individual should be separate.

DSC vs eSign

DSC

Typically issued by a licensed Certifying Authority and may involve secure certificate / hardware-token use depending on certificate type and application.

eSign

CCA's eSign ecosystem enables electronic signatures through an approved online signing service.

Both create electronic signatures, but their workflow and use cases are different.

Hardware Token

For applicable Class 3 DSC usage, private keys are stored in secure cryptographic hardware.

This is commonly referred to as a DSC token / USB crypto token.

The token should be:

  • Kept secure

  • Not shared casually

  • Used only by the authorized subscriber

  • Protected with its PIN / password

Documents / Details Commonly Needed

Exact requirements depend on the Certifying Authority and applicant type.

Generally keep ready:

  • Applicant Name

  • PAN

  • Aadhaar / other accepted identity proof

  • Address Proof

  • Mobile Number

  • Email ID

  • Photograph, where required

  • Organisation Details, if applicable

  • Authorization Letter, if applicable

  • GST / Company / LLP details, depending on use case

Current CA-specific checklist should be verified before final application.

Personal DSC vs Organisation DSC

Personal / Individual DSC

Issued to an individual subscriber.

Organisation-related DSC

May include organisation details along with authorized-person identity, depending on certificate type and use case.

For organisational use, correct company / LLP / entity details are important.

DSC Application — Basic Process

Step 1 — Identify Why DSC Is Needed

Ask:

  • MCA?

  • GST?

  • Tender?

  • Income Tax?

  • Organisation signing?

  • Other Government portal?

The actual use case determines what certificate is suitable.

Step 2 — Choose a Licensed Certifying Authority

Use a CA licensed by the Controller of Certifying Authorities.

Avoid unknown providers that cannot establish valid CA authorization.

Step 3 — Prepare Applicant Documents

Identity, address, PAN, mobile, email and applicable organisation details ready வைத்திருக்கவும்.

Step 4 — Complete Identity Verification

Applicable CCA-prescribed verification process complete செய்ய வேண்டும்.

Examples may include:

  • Aadhaar-based verification

  • Video verification

  • Supporting document verification

Step 5 — Certificate Generation

Successful verification பிறகு DSC certificate issue செய்யப்படுகிறது according to the CA process.

Step 6 — Install / Configure Token

Where hardware token is used:

  • Driver installation

  • Token recognition

  • PIN setup

  • Certificate visibility

check செய்ய வேண்டும்.

Step 7 — Register DSC on Required Portal

Some portals require your DSC to be separately registered or updated.

Example:

GST Portal provides Register DSC / Update DSC functionality.

Step 8 — Test Signing

Before an important filing / tender deadline:

  • Token detected?

  • Certificate valid?

  • PIN working?

  • Signer software / utility installed?

  • Portal browser setup correct?

verify செய்யுங்கள்.

DSC Validity

DSC validity depends on the certificate purchased / issued and the CA's applicable options.

Before purchase:

  • Validity period

  • Token inclusion

  • Signing / encryption

  • Organisation / individual type

  • Renewal / reissue process

verify செய்யவும்.

DSC Renewal / Reissue

Certificate validity expire ஆனால் applicable renewal / new issuance process தேவைப்படும்.

Renewal last minute வரை wait செய்யாமல் deadline முன்பே plan செய்வது better.

DSC Checklist

  • DSC purpose identified

  • Correct applicant identified

  • Licensed CA selected

  • PAN ready

  • Aadhaar / ID proof ready

  • Address proof ready

  • Mobile active

  • Email active

  • Organisation documents ready, if applicable

  • Verification completed

  • DSC issued

  • Hardware token configured, if applicable

  • Token PIN stored securely

  • Portal DSC registration completed

  • Test signature completed

  • Certificate expiry date recorded

Common DSC Problems

Token Not Detected

Possible reasons:

  • Token driver not installed

  • USB issue

  • Wrong middleware

  • Browser / signing utility issue

DSC Expired

Expired certificate cannot normally be used for valid new signatures.

PAN / Signatory Mismatch

Portal account signatory details and DSC identity must match applicable portal rules.

Wrong Certificate Selection

Tender / signing / organisation requirements differ. Purchase செய்வதற்கு முன் exact use case confirm செய்ய வேண்டும்.

PIN Forgotten / Token Locked

Token security credentials carefully maintain செய்ய வேண்டும்.

Sharing the DSC Token

DSC belongs to the subscriber / authorised user. Token and PIN sharing creates security and compliance risk.

Security Tips

  • Never share token PIN unnecessarily

  • Do not leave DSC token permanently connected

  • Do not send token with PIN written on it

  • Use trusted systems

  • Check certificate expiry

  • Remove old / revoked certificates

  • Keep application and purchase records

DSC vs Scanned Signature

Scanned handwritten signature image and DSC are not the same.

A scanned signature is simply an image.

A DSC-based digital signature uses cryptographic signing and digital-certificate validation.
